A review on Woohoo Nana’s products and a bit of a laugh at my expense!
Be warned, content about urinary incontinence & some offensive language – not everyone’s “cup of tea”
I am sure many woman can relate pretty well to some of this! But first, let’s tell my embarrassing back-story!
So, childbirth sux right?! The pain is horrendous, nothing is as “beautiful” as TV makes us believe, well, especially not for those of us in the “driver’s seat”. Three full-term standard births, luckily no issues with natural labour for me, no tearing, and no other interventions, just “stick to it and push that sucker out” type labours.
Those of us who go through it know that in many cases, popping that kid out isn’t the end of it! Although often no obvious damage is done, some of us are left with embarrassing issues long after that date has past. This is true for me! Some of those issues that I was left with, was a slight bladder prolapse (no big deal) and the embarrassment of Stress Incontinence! Not that I recognised it straight away!
About 7 years after the birth of my last (and he is DEFINITELY the last!), I started to partake in Crossfit to help manage symptoms of an auto-immune issue I have, as well as to try to lose a few kilo’s and help my mental wellbeing. But this is when the effects of those births started to really kick my ass!
Anyone who partakes in functional movement or high intensity programs will understand the amount of time spent lifting heavy, running and jumping. Anyone who suffers any kind of stress incontinence will understand that those activities can also be super embarrassing, particularly as you get tired!
So, although CrossFit has been great for my overall health, I’ve dropped a shit-tonne of kilo’s, stopped my medications, and feel great mentally and physically, it has been more devastating for my bladder issues. I am currently going through specialists to correct my issue, and a heads up for any of you who experience similar issues, YES it is common, but NO it’s not normal! Seek some help! There are LOADS of aids available to us leakers, as well as corrective options… You don’t have to live like this!
To aid me along the way, I’ve been using supermarket leakage products, which sometimes suffice, sometimes don’t…. all dependant on the programming. But let me warn you….. when these things are full, it doesn’t take much for them to implode under stress and you don’t just dribble on the floor, it’s more like a small water balloon exploding in your underwear, and under minimal activewear, this is super evident to anyone around you! Even worse when someone is standing watching your feet while they judge/count your double under (skipping) movements, right at moment of implosion!
So, although these supermarket products suffice for the majority of time, they’re not perfect! Team that up with a year+ of being a moon-cupper (see my previous blog post about this here) for financial and environmental benefits, it seemed like a bit of a backwards step using these “one use” products as floor wee protection.
A fellow Hive advertiser, Julie from Woohoo Nana, sells washable menstrual pads. Although there is no way I could stomach bleeding on a reusable pad, weeing on a reusable pad, and washing it, wasn’t a big deal for me, so I approached Julie to see if her products could help me. Little did I know, she already marketed her products for LBL (Light Bladder Leakage), but would they work for stress “squirts”? The questioning began!
Oh no, here we go again, the SIZE question?! REALLY?! I have no idea how I “measure up” against my fellow woman beings…. How the heck would I know?!
You know what? Although Julie offered a great variety of options, she was super understanding of my naivety, and knew just how to approach the situation! Evaluating my “issue” through my story, and making suggestions that she thought would be best for me. All that left me to do, was choose fabric styles! Easy that one… SKULLS!
So just like that, six reusable pads were ordered just for me! Julie kept me informed of progress right through the process, and within a week, those suckers (punny) were in the post, winging (punny again) their way to me!
On arrival, I followed the instructions to wash before use to maximise absorbency, hung them out to dry with the awesome little drying clip that Julie had included in my parcel, and got them all prepped for wear!
A couple of days later, was test day…. I snapped one of these products into my undies, and headed out the door to training! I have to admit, they felt thin, and I wasn’t convinced they would meet the absorbency of the store-bought products, and I was a tad nervous knowing how many “fails” I’d experienced with store bought! Don’t know ‘til you try though right?
After an hour of running, skipping, box jumps and heavy lifting, multiple exposure “leaks” (TBH sometimes high-pressure leaks), my first test was complete! Don’t get me wrong, this pretty skull pad was wet – it was a hard morning alright?! LOL…. But, my pants were dry, and I didn’t feel the familiar uncomfortable warm feeling of dribble running down the inside of my legs! Nothing worse than wet socks! First test = PASS.
The second and third test resulted in the same dry pants (and socks)! And just to extra test these things out, I’ve ended up with a nice little cough and cold coincidentally (thanks kids) to really trial these things in “normal” day-to-day life! Coughing is another of my “issues” I face with stress incontinence, but these pads have also passed the test being used overnight and not shifting around in my underwear while I toss and turn…. No bed dribbles! Bonus! I can keep them sheets going for at least another month now! JUST KIDDING LOL
So, I’m sold, the service that Woohoo Nana provided me, the courtesy and the assistance in helping me select the right product for me, was impeccable! She’s also been in contact with me since to check how I’m going with them and if I have any questions! The products are nice and light, but sure do their job…. I highly recommend these little gems to anyone. Be sure to also ask Julie about her “dry bags” for storing used pads in until you can get them to the wash. They are a little more expensive to outlay for originally, but still really well priced, especially considering they’re handmade and are awesome quality. The cost of one is a little more than a cost of a supermarket leading brand pack. The ease of washing and drying, and the quality of these pads, I’m sure will save me LOADS of money in the long-term! Not only that, but now I feel a little “greener” and friendlier to our environment! I can now confidently say, that until my “permanent fix” is undertaken with specialists, I am far more comfortable doing Double Unders in a class environment…. Who knows, now I’m not making excuses for my bladder, I may be able to successfully string together a decent set of them!
